A True Dickensian Delight

I am totally obsessed by theatre, and last night I went to see one of Britain's best actors in two plays by Charles Dickens.

Here is my review........

Having never seen Simon Callow outside of a television screen I was extremely excited to see this production and it did not disappoint.
Callow was an absolute dream, capturing the whole audience from word one; it was a cliché hearing a pin drop moment. Effortlessly switching from one character to another, and never loosing the audience’s attention and focus. Personally it was the best piece of theatre I have ever seen, I cried, twice. You felt instantly connected, not to Callow himself, but to Mr Chops and Dr Marigold; two typically Dickensian characters. Even when unfortunately all the house lights came on half way through the second act, something that would have thrown a lesser actor, Callow stayed continuously and perfectly in character.
Mr Chops is a dwarf in a travelling show, and his story is narrated by his owner. Mr Chops lives day to day, and his one true wish is to come into property. As the story unfolds, Mr Chops’ wish comes true, but things don’t work out quite as he hoped.
For me Dr Marigold was the better of the two stories. Told in the first person, Dr Marigold is a tale of loss, hope, and affection.
The acting was true brilliance in itself, but for me, the set was something else. The stage was covered in sumptuous red velvet and old theatre posters; you are transported back to Victorian England and one of Dickens’ own infamous readings.
Thanks to the true brilliance that is Dickens, and an actor whose story telling prowess defies words; Dr Marigold and Mr Chops is a must see!

In Search of the Perfect Feature Wall

I need your help! I have been trawling the DIY store to find the perfect wallpaper for my new bedroom. I say 'new' it has been painted for around 6 months, but I fancy another change.
Heres the story:
It has gone from having wallpaper with trucks on (it was my little brothers room, before I moved away to University), to what it is now; a black grape colour on one wall and light grey on the other 3, and its beautiful. That is ever since I helped my Mum pick out the wallpaper for the living room. I could not resist the gorgeous paper on offer, I even took a few free samples that are just big enough to cut and frame. Consequently one of the grey walls in my bedroom is going to be covered with pretty paper, but I just can't decide! This is where you come in......

Its bright, but the pattern is just so pretty!

I think I have fallen in love! City prints; Paris, Rome, New York, London.

Happy Thanksgiving!

To my American readers I want to wish you a very very very happy thanksgiving. We don't celebrate it here in England, but Food Network (yes its my favourite channel!) have dubbed it thank you day for us Brits, so I am going to participate in the spirit of things.

I am thankful for.....

Its plain and simple; life. There are so many people who don't have the luxury of a fulfilled life and everything ti brings, and I reminding myself everyday just how lucky I am.

I want to say thank you too.....

Every single person who has ever told me not to give up. I have been through, and am going through some tough times, but I know giving up is no good for anyone.


Crazy Days

Oh my goodness, the past few days at Eat. Enjoy. Live towers have been totally crazy. I will attempt to cram into this tiny blog just some of the things I've been up too.

  1. Attempting to choose new wallpaper for the feature wall in my bedroom. I need your advice on this one, wait until tomorrow's post.
  2. Sewing. My Mum's Christmas present is far bigger and far more complicated than I first anticipated.
  3. Ordering copious amounts of olive oil and sugar - yes sugar scrubs are my stocking fillers this year.
  4. Menu planning for the next couple of weeks. New ideas courtesy of my two fabulous new cook books
  5. Searching Etsy for the perfect present for my friend.
  6. Choosing which lucky cookies are going to make it onto my Christmas cookie list this year.
  7. Trawling Christmas cookery magazines to see what sort of turkey I will be cooking this year. Yes, I said I. Possibly rather foolishly, I have volunteered my services as head chef on Christmas morning.
  8. Last but not least, I am still, if rather unsuccessfully searching for a job.
All this within just a 4 days. I have to say I am so tired and I don't know where the time has gone, but I am proud of what I've achieved.

It was my 24th birthday yesterday, and I had an amazing birthday weekend so I thought I would bombard you with some photos. Meals out with the girls, time with the family, cocktails and cakes = simply wonderful!

Crafty Finds

I went to my local church Christmas fayre this weekend, and it is FULL of craft stalls. I had expected to find something good, but I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did I get a phone case, several cards, and a pendant; all hand-made of course. I also got this amazingly gorgeous mirror. It is made using a crafting technique called decoupage. This particular one is covered in pictures of the lovely Miss Hepburn. A beautiful hand-made and totally unique mirror for only £6 = yes please!
Look for local Fayre's near you, sometimes you don't find anything, but on those really special and exciting trips you find a diamond!

Crafting - Easy Sew Gift Bags

I was trawling the Internet and my local shops for a cheap and cheerful fabric gift bag for two gorgeous little girls I know in Italy. After hours of trying I decided what the hay I'm going to make one. I brought some cheap fabric, and ribbon and got my sewing machine out.
You can make this bag to any size (I used the measurements Width - 9ins and Length - 15ins) and it was the perfect size to fit a few small presents in.

1. Measure and cut out the piece of fabric. Then pin a hem all the way around the fabric; I used a hem of about a quarter of an inch.

2. Sew the hem, and then sew the lengths together leaving a half inch gap at the top.

3. Thread some ribbon though the top hem and fasten at both sides of the bag.

4. Fill and deliver!

You could even make these as a no-sew project and use fabric tape.

Recipe - Provencal Beef Stew

I love, love, love this recipe. Its my yummy dinner for this evening.
Its made in a slow cooker or crock pot (I think that is the US equivalent).


450g beef stewing steak, raw, lean, cut into cubes.
1 small onion, chopped.
300g mushrooms, sliced.
2 garlic cloves, crushed.
2 medium carrots, sliced.
425g butter beans, drained and rinsed.
1 cube vegetable stock, made up with 350ml of hot water.
400g chopped tomatoes.
1/2 tsp dried oregano.
1/4 tsp thyme.
1/2 tsp salt.
1/4 tsp pepper.


You ready.....its SO easy......
Place everything in the slow cooker switch it onto low and leave for 6-7 hours. Make it in the morning, and dinner's done for when you get home from work; simple!

I added a handful of spinach to this recipe just because I had some in the fridge.


Well this weekend I headed down to Upton, which is the tiniest village ever; 6 houses and a farm, no I am not joking! My Aunt and Uncle own and run the farm, they have chickens, cows, sheep and LOTS of farm cats.
I'm not normally a farm kinda girl, but I was determined to get away from the city and get some 'fresh' air. Anyway my mum and I arrived early Saturday morning and began mucking in and helping feed the farm kittens - sooooo cute.  Now I've been toying with the idea of becoming a vegetarian for a few days, I even went so far as to buy 'The Kind Diet' by Alicia Sliverstone.
Sunday brought a much more peaceful day, as Mum and I took Ollie and Rocky for a walk. 2 hours we spent walking through the gorgeous English countryside, the sun even peeped through the clouds at one point. By the end we were both covered in mud and exhausted, but utterly content.
I loved my time on the farm this weekend. I nearly stole a kitten, went on walks with mum, and saw my family; although I could have done without seeing a dead fox, but overall it wasn't at all bad. I am a city girl at heart though and needless to say I painted my nails as soon as I got home!

Gleeking Out

Tonight Glee starts again in the UK, and I am majorly excited. I ADORE this show, it just makes me smile; and we all need that once in a while don't we?
My best friends Sammy, Rosie and Nikki are also obsessed and I would love to be spending tonight with them all, but unfortunately we are all dotted around the country. So this post is for my girls, I miss you all loads, and enjoy the show tonight; I expect to be text de-briefing after the show.

Today everyone is my lovely father's 62nd birthday.
We have had some many good times together, and even though we don't spend as much alone time together anymore we still have daddy/daughter dates every month.

Recipe - Turkey Lasagne

Who doesn't love a classic lasagne right?

Well the traditional version is far too high in calories for me so I have adapted it and made this beautiful and wonderful tasting turkey version.


500g turkey mince
6 lasagne sheets
3 carrots, chopped thinly
1 leek, chopped thinly
1 red pepper, chopped thinly
2 cloves of garlic, chopped thinly
2 tbsp Italian seasoning
Salt and pepper
300ml skimmed milk
1 tbsp butter
3 tbsp plain flour
50g cheddar cheese, grated
Tin of chopped tomatoes


  1. Turn the oven onto gas mark 7/220 c/425 f.
  2. Fry the leek, carrots and pepper in a saucepan for 5-10 minutes until softened and lightly browned. Add the garlic, 1 tbsp of Italian seasoning and some salt and pepper. Take the vegetables out of the pan.
  3. Put the turkey mince in the pan and cook for 5 minutes until browned. Add the chopped tomatoes, 1 tbsp of Italian seasoning, salt and pepper. Place the vegetables back in the pan, give everything a quick stir and leave on a low simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Whilst the turkey is cooking, make the bechamel sauce. Place the skimmed milk, butter, and plain flour into a saucepan and place on the heat. You need to whisk the sauce constantly, until the mixture becomes thick and smooth (about 5 minutes). Take off the heat and add half the cheese, whisking again until the cheese melts.
  5. In your lasagne dish place the turkey mixture first followed by 3 lasagne sheets, then the bechamel sauce. Repeat these steps again and you should be left with the sauce on the top. Place in the oven for 20 minutes. Add the remaining cheese and cook for a further 10 minutes.
  6. Enjoy!
NB: with this recipe there is no need to pre-cook the lasagne sheets.

I first met/heard of Anna Hodge on Lauren Conrad's website a few months ago and since then I've become COMPLETELY hooked on her blog - http://fashboulevard.blogspot.com/.
Not only does she provide us with the latest hot and not so hot celebrity looks she does it from a 'girl next door' perspective. Anna is the type of girl who's wardrobe you HAVE to have and would do anything to get, not only that, she is totally lovely; which comes through in each and every post.
Fashion speaks in many different languages, and so it really doesn't matter that we are on opposite sides of the Atlantic, I can still relate to her. Unfortunately I can't buy everything she blogs about, major disappointment, but I am finding my own 'like' pieces over here in the UK.
